It could be a case of mind over matter this week as we celebrate the calendar New Year with an illuminating super Full Moon, many planets in pragmatic Capricorn and mental Mercury on the move.
As every year, much of the Western world celebrates a New Year just after the solstice. With the Sun in pragmatic Capricorn, there is inevitably some looking back and taking account. This is followed by a desire to set new goals and achieve more of them under the aegis of this strategic and ambitious sign.
As 2026 dawns, though, Mercury—the planet of rational thinking, communication, information and transportation—forms hard aspects to outer planets. We may alternate between feeling confused, to despondent to ambitious but stressed. This planet also has to do with our mental state, so it might be good to remember the old adage “Change your mind, change your universe” and accent the positive. It also rules the nervous system, so this is a good week to lie low and unplug often, if not completely, from the newsfeed and other digital distractions.
Added to this, wounded healer comet-asteroid Chiron stations direct on Friday, reminding us how important self-care is at this time of year. A sense of overwhelm often coincides. Taking time to relax now is both natural and essential. Spa break, anyone?
The first two days of the week come under the influence of Mercury in Sagittarius, a sign not shy about speaking out about a good cause or personal beliefs, squaring off with Saturn. This aspect can lead to negative thinking. And it indicates that doing so may meet with roadblocks in communications or strong resistance to the message. If we remain mindful, though, we can find new way to express ideas and gain understanding from others. As well, warrior Mars sextiles the north node, helping us to listen to our intuition as we seek to make tangible progress. With the Moon in practical Taurus, a sign that respects the body and physical limits, it helps us to make positive use of these aspects on Monday and Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Mercury and Mars form nerve-jangling aspects to Uranus, configurations that contribute to a notable surge in nervous energy, impacting both our mental state and actions. Extra caution is advised if on the move to attend New Year’s Eve celebrations. For as Mercury quincunx Uranus ramps up mental activity, our thoughts may race, and concentration could be difficult to maintain, leading to a sense of mental restlessness throughout the day. And with Mars sesquiquadrate Uranus, there is an increased likelihood of acting impulsively. This energetic combination can encourage risk-taking, sometimes without adequate consideration, resulting in decisions or actions that may be unwise or reckless.
Thursday, January 1, might feel like a big hangover whether we overindulged the night before or not. We find ourselves with a sense of confusion or mental fogginess, as Mercury forms a square aspect to Neptune. This influence can make it challenging to focus, and we may drift in a dream-like state during our waking hours. Creative or cocooning efforts benefit, though. At the same time, Venus forms a harmonious sextile to the north node, highlighting themes of compassion and connection. Empathy infuses our interactions, making it easier to forgive others and foster meaningful relationships.
And the mental fog clears as soon as 4:11 pm EST when Mercury enters Capricorn. Until January 20, our thinking and communications will naturally gravitate around practical concerns and the steps required to bring our ambitions to fruition. This is a favourable time for organizing, planning, and implementing strategies that move us closer to our objectives. However, while efficiency and productivity are heightened, it can put a damper on both a sense of humour and imaginative thinking.
The weekend outlook includes Saturday’s Full Moon, exact at 5:03 am EST, that is also a supermoon, meaning that its orbit brings it closest to Earth.
Luna will shine brightly and intensely in the emotional sign of Cancer exactly opposite the Sun in Capricorn at 13 degrees. Fortuitously, it also resides close to optimistic Jupiter, which amplifies both intuition and empathy. We may look forward to making positive changes to our domestic life and family connections.
In counterpoint, the pragmatic Capricorn influence is also strong, with both Venus (relationships, values, finances) and Mars (actions, assertion) closely conjunct the Sun. This troika is present during this lunation and continues for the next few weeks. Three planets in earth signs can help ground us during a swell of emotions. The trick is to not regard feelings as either-or: i.e., either we give into or cut ourselves off from them. Balance is called for.
On Sunday, the Moon moves into romantic, creative Leo. Conditions are favourable for activities that involve both as we end the week on an upbeat and sociable note. Be willing to be spontaneous to make the most of it. Passions can flare around midday, though, perhaps leading to a confrontation. A willingness to listen and compromise can help defuse any such situation.
Happy New Year!
